The West Coast Zebra and Society Finch Show is a judged specialty exhibition that concentrates on these two species of finches. While the show is central to this event, it is also about sharing information, buying and selling birds, and generally a nice social gathering of people with a common interest.

Judge - Clarence Culwell

Clarence Culwell has been raising birds since about 1950. Clarence began with American Parakeets, which he bred for several years, then added a pair of Zebra finches which caught his interest and has been a priority ever since. Clarence has also kept Society finches for 56 years. In addition, Clarence has kept Cockatiels, Love birds, Senegals, Conures, Parrotlets, and Cockatoos.

Clarence attended his first NCBS National in Dallas, Texas in 1977. Clarence says; “That was over thirty years ago, and the NCBS has never lost its excitement. I have exhibited both finches and parrots. I have consistently placed in the top 10 at NCBS with Societies and Zebras. I first judged parrots at the Kansas City National in 1981 when they were in a division called Foreign Birds. I also judged parrots at the Manchester National in 1994 and again in 2001. I became a board member of the National Cage Bird Show about 2001. It's been great to be a part of the Show of Shows.” Note: Clarence was a judge again at the recent NCBS Nationals.

Clarence has been a NFSS judge for 28 years, since the beginning of NFSS, and was a member of the committee that wrote the Society and Zebra Standards. Clarence has judged many NFSS shows, including judging finches at two national shows in 1981 and 1998.

Clarence has judged two previous “Zebra and Society finch shows”. Clarence participate and showed at all of the Zebra and Society finch shows held in Kansas City!

Clarence says; “I began exhibiting my birds and enjoyed the competition and friendships I made. Some of my dearest friends are friends I have made in the bird world. I started judging birds from the encouragement I received from many of these people.”

Clarence has served as a board member of the National Cage Bird Show and the NFSS. He has also served as club president, etc. for various bird organizations.

Sales Area

The West Coast Zebra and Society Finch show is also an excellent opportunity to purchase some prize winning stock from some of the country's top breeders. Always a popular area at the show, there are previous examples of attendees purchasing stock at this show and going on to win at other shows with birds they have bred from that stock. The sales area will be open each day of the show, but will shut down during presentations or other events requiring the attention of the crowd. Come find that Zebra or Society that you've been looking for!

Sales area space is limited. Exhibitors with birds entered in the show may also have birds for sale with no additional charge (minimum 5 entries). Non-exhibitors may also inquire about availability. Charge for 1/2 table space is $30. (No loud hookbill species please). Any birds showing signs of illness will be asked to be removed from the sales/exhibit area.
